Why Give to the Public Library?

Alamogordo Public Library is a tax-supported institution, but it is not supported as well as it could be. Private giving can make the difference between an adequate and a great community resource.

Or library is funded year-to-year by the City of Alamogordo (with some contributions by county and state government). There is no long-term funding, nor is the annual funding guaranteed.

Alamogordo Public Library is open 53 hours a week, including Saturdays and Evenings. It is a cost-effective operation that provides excellent customer service and immediate access to a collection of over 100,000 items, with a much larger collection available through inter-library loan. There is something for everyone at your library, including substantial collections of Spanish and German books and Southwest history. The library is the repository for the papers of the western writer Eugene Manlove Rhodes. The Children’s Library is a particular treasure. It provides programs throughout the year for children of all ages, including teens, and over 1,000 children participate in the Summer Reading Program each year. Library service is free of charge to all residents of Otero County.

APL Foundation is raising money for capital improvements in the library in two areas: (1) near-term equipment needs such as bookshelves and computers; (2) a long-term plan to have a larger library building.

How to Donate

There are several ways you can donate to your library through APL Foundation:

  • support our partner businesses
  • financial contributions (does your employer match gifts?)
  • buy a book
  • donation of equipment or services
  • used book sales
  • donate aluminum drink cans
  • spare change

We are also partnered with some local businesses who will donate on your behalf.

APL Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity and your gift is tax-deductible as allowed by law. The Foundation's EIN (federal tax number) is 20-1283200.

Donate a "Virtual" Square Foot to the New Library

The estimated cost of the new library is $250 per square foot, and we are offering donors a "Virtual Deed" to one square foot of the building for a $250 contribution. The donation can be from an individual, family, company, or other group, and can be recorded:

  • in that name
  • for the love of a person or group
  • in honor of a person or group
  • in memory of a person
  • a dedication with the wording of your choice

Call 575-437-3463 for further details, or send a check to:

APL Foundation
P. O. Box 2285
Alamogordo, NM 88311-2285

along with the dedication to be used and a phone number where the you may be reached. The information provided will be entered onto a "Virtual Deed", complete with seal, and the name(s) of donors and others to be included will be listed on a plaque in the current library, which will eventually be relocated to the new library which will be a "green" (energy-efficient and environment-friendly) building. A sample deed is shown above.

You can also donate in person at the APL Foundation office, 3199 North White Sands Boulevard, Suite A-4, on Tuesdays  from 11:00 AM to 2:30 PM. Call the office at 575-921-8002 for more information.

Support Our Partner Businesses

Some local businesses will make a contribution to APL Foundation based on your purchases, at no extra cost to you.

Financial Contributions

Make your check payable to "APL Foundation" and mail it to:

APL Foundation
P. O. Box 2285
Alamogordo, NM 88311-2285

To earmark your donation for the new library, write "Building Fund" on your check. Donations to the new building of $25 or more will be recognized on the permanent Donor Tree in the new building. See below concerning $250 donations for a Virtual Deed.

If you don't specify that your gift is for the new building, we will place it in the general fund and use it where the need is greatest.

Does your employer match gifts? Check with your personnel or human resources department. Many employers will match your charitable contributions. This doubles your gift at no cost to you! Here is one local employer we know of with a gift-matching program:

  • PNM (Public Service Company of New Mexico) has a matching program for employees and retirees. Read about their program here: PNM Matching Gifts Program. Include the program's application form (with part 1 filled out) with your check and mail to us at the address above, then we will complete the form and forward it to PNM.
